At Victoria Park Primary School teachers plan using the Western Australian Curriculum for Mathematics. We use the proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning to support students to demonstrate maximum progress and high achievement through purposeful and engaging mathematical learning experiences.
Problem solving is a whole school priority with problem solving and reasoning strategies explicitly taught using the ‘Gradual Release of Responsibility’ (I do…we do…you do). Teachers use the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach when teaching problem solving and new concepts to students.
Teachers use ‘First Steps’, ‘iMaths’ and ‘Back to Front Maths’ resources to support their teaching and learning, and these resources allow teachers to differentiate the curriculum to support all student learning needs.
Victoria Park Primary School has a partnership with Curtin University to facilitate a weekly Maths Club focusing on developing problem solving skills and providing extension opportunities.
